“Beer is back!”
In an obvious celebration of the end of prohibition, a nightclub setting on a Paramount soundstage becomes the setting for a loosely scripted Hollywood party.
Silent comedy star Ben Turpin plays the cross-eyed bartender, with Jimmy Durante, Rudy Vallee and many other celebrities appearing in brief vignettes.
Among the highlights is an early glimpse of the slapstick of Ted Healy and his Stooges: Larry, Moe and Curly (with hair!), Polly Moran and Chic Sale improvising with Ben over a beer, and I would bet that Rudy Vallee is actually tipsy as he reminisces at the piano with songrwriters Harry Revel and Mack Gordon! Mack eventually sings one of the duo’s hits.
This rare one-reeler ends with a not-so-young Ben Turpin taking a beautiful, classic flip pratfall, (one which Jackie Gleason would become famous for performing over twenty years later, despite his ample size!)
